Artistic Director

The Camelot Theatre Company (CTC) Board of Directors is looking for an Artistic Director responsible for providing the artistic vision and production direction while overseeing the organizationís production resources to ensure continued success in carrying out its mission. The scope of responsibility will include artistic and program policies, external and community relations, audience development, long-range planning, as well as operational, financial, and administrative management. Together with the Board of Directors and the Executive Director, the Artistic Director will work to ensure Camelotís financial and operational stability and success in achieving its artistic, financial and outreach goals. An excellent knowledge of fiscal management is critical. Ideally, candidates will have a combination of experience that includes previous employment in nonprofit theatre with both artistic and administrative leadership. Candidates with senior level experience aspiring to take on an artistic and general management role will be considered.


  • Develops and articulates Camelot's artistic policy and makes recommendations to the Board on that policy; inspires company at large with artistic vision;
  • Oversees and is responsible for quality artistic productions;
  • Collaborates with Executive Director to ensure smooth coordination of artistic and executive functions and to ensure a creative, supportive environment for all Camelot staff and volunteers;
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to review and update the Theatre's mission statement; reports to Board on artistic progress;
  • Hires and supervises artistic staff;
  • Hires and supervises Director of the Conservatory;
  • Works with the Conservatory Director, Executive Director and the Board to define and staff the educational programs that Camelot offers;
  • Selects plays, musicals and spotlights to be produced for each season using the annual survey of our patrons as one of the tools to aid in the selection process;
  • Selects and supervises directors, designers, composers and choreographers for each season, and through delegation, all production personnel working on those productions; Casts actors, including understudies; builds and leads acting company;
  • Defines the budgetary needs for all artistic areas, and, through delegation, is responsible for provision of budgets for all production departments; Extends this process to work with the Executive Director and the Board on the overall Camelot Theatre budget;
  • Supervises preparation of each season's performance and rehearsal schedules;
  • Represents Camelot Theatre at company and public functions; company spokesperson to local theatre, the business community and the media;
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director and the Board in defining individual fund--raising efforts and on the applications for foundation and government grants through phone calls, meetings and fundraising events.; Provides prose and entertainment if necessary;
  • Works with with Executive Director on Marketing and Communications, including Press Releases, programs and advertising;
  • Negotiates show royalties and Equity Contracts;
  • Builds relationships with artists and sister organizations nationwide.
  • This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Possess a valid Driverís license and have access to a vehicle for transportation to and from business related events.
    Reports To: CTC Board of Directors
    Supervises: Directors, Resident Designers, Production Manager, Conservatory Director, Guest Directors and Designers, Resident Music Directors and Actors.
    Job Class: 1.0 FTE, Exempt

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Necessary to the Successful Performance of the Position):
    Education: College degree with emphasis on theatre or equivalent or relevant experience in artistic direction. Work Experience: Extensive background in professional theatre; experience in artistic management at a senior level; proven record of direction over considerable period.
    Physical Ability: Clear and articulate communication skills.
    Other Ability: Ability to select, direct, motivate, and supervise artistic and production staff; ability to work harmoniously with senior administration staff; ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that gets along with clients, customers, co-workers and management.
